Different Types of Mold Found in Homes

Different Types of Mold

Mold is used to age cheese. Mold is used to improve the texture of the wine. Penicillin, the antibiotic, was derived from mold. However, heavy exposure to mold, in its basic form, can cause harm to your health. Following are some of the most common types of mold.

Alternaria

Alternaria is often found outdoors, however, they grow indoor as well, usually in damp places, like under the sink or the shower with leaky pipes. They can also be seen in areas that have been flooded or subjected to other water damage. It has the ability to spread easily from one part of the house to another. Exposure to this mold can cause asthma attacks and allergic reactions.

Aspergillus

Aspergillus is frequently found inside the house. They thrive in oxygen-rich environments. They are the common contaminants of bread and potatoes. They grow on or in many trees and plants. While they are important commercially, and medically, Aspergillus in its basic form, can cause allergic reactions and respiratory infections.

Aureobasidium

Aureobasidium is pink and black in color. They can often be found on damp caulking and window frames. They can also be found on wallpaper, wooden surfaces, and painted surfaces. It can cause allergic reactions in many people.

Botrytis

Botrytis can often be found in areas where the ventilation is poor. The humidity levels will be high in poorly ventilated areas. High humidity levels are ideal for this mold to thrive. It can trigger asthma, as well as cause allergic reactions.

Cladosporium

Cladosporium can grow in cool areas. Often found on carpets, wood surfaces, cabinets, and floorboards, it can cause a number of respiratory problems in human beings.

Fusarium

Another mold that can grow and spread in lower temperatures. They can be found on water-damaged carpets and other damp fabrics. People with low immune systems are very much susceptible to this mold. It can cause allergic reactions, respiratory infections, and can trigger asthma.

Penicillium

The blue or green mold can be found on damp carpets, insulation, wallpaper, and mattresses. They can spread from one part of the house to another very quickly. Exposure to this mold can cause allergic reactions, inflammation of the lungs, and sinus infections.

All houses develop water leaks at one point or another. Water leaks cause moisture to form, leading to mold growth. Basements are more vulnerable to water leaks than any other parts of the house. A basement leak will lead to basement moisture. Waterproofing the basement and keeping your house clean will help to ensure you don’t have to deal with ANY of these types of mold.
